Simple Melody

This Style Algorithm, besides producing basic melodies for any instrument, also serves as a tutorial for how to use the various functions included in the PME. In fact in the docs section of the PME download you will find a file called tutorial.pdf which helps you understand the PME via the Simple Melody Style Algorithm. I’m not going to reproduce that entire tutorial here but I will give some examples.

Audio without any extra functions being used. Sheet music.

That piece uses the full range of pitches, durations, and dynamics available in the PME. It's a bit random and all over the place. Let's try to constrain it a bit.

Audio with restrictions on the pitches used. Sheet music.

With this one we’ve limited the pitches to the C-major scale, emphasized the tonic and dominant to appear more often than other intervals and limited the octave range to two located near the middle of the piano (A3 and A4). It's getting closer but maybe needs a bit more tweaking.

Audio with more restrictions on pitches and now on durations and dynamics. Sheet music.

In this variation we’ve further restricted the intervals used eliminating some of them (super tonic and leading tone) and have restricted the durations and dynamics to be used. Still not completely convincing, perhaps, but with a charitable ear one can perhaps hear some musical ideas of interest. And of course it's still unique to the initial seed we used.
