Francis Picabia’s Optophone 1

Painting

Optophone 1 Original by Francis Picabia.

Francis Picabia created his Optophone 1 in 1922. The painting is inspired by a device called an “optophone” which was a device intended to help the blind by converting the black marks on a page to audible tones that the blind person could convert into letters.

Picabia’s work is a kind of poetic interpretation where the user is supposed to be able to see the line drawing in the middle. The circles represent the spinning of the device in the manner of a record player.

In this style algorithm, the image in the center is randomly taken from drawings of statues. The circles in the middle are of a uniform but random size and color.

This style algorithm was done as a collaboration with the artist Wanksy.
