Every year on February 2 in the US, a ceremony is contrived to see whether a groundhog sees its shadow when exiting its burrow. If it sees its shadow this means six more weeks of winter. If not, then it means an early spring.
I have expanded this a bit so that when it’s not February 2, the groundhog will see another creature who may or may not be carrying an item. What this means for the weather is very random.
