This graphical notation style is based on a method that Morton Feldman created around 1951. The horizontal areas indicate how long to hold a note. The relative position of the shaded area (upper, middle, lower) tell the performer in what range of their instrument to play a note of their choosing (high, middle, low).
Because I had the data lying around I added the option for volume. The darker the shaded area the louder you should play it.
